E10 Mandate

Will standard ULP still be available

17/11/09 -- Several clubs have asked will we still be able to get standard 91 octane petrol after the State governments mandate of 5% of all non premium fuel sold in Queensland must be Ethanol

The short answer is yes but maybe not from the big fuel chains.

The Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation paper  covering the Public Benefit Test for the Legislation of a 5% Ethanol Mandate  (PDF file) details the effects of the legislation.

It seems the big chains need to sell 73% of all fuel as E10 (chains of less than 10 service stations are not included in the mandate) The other important thing to note in the report is that there is only enough ethanol likely to be produced in Queensland to make half of the ULP & E10 current Queensland requirements. so half of all non-PULP supplied will need to be standard 91 octane ULP

See also the Environment Australia Report  "Setting the Limit of Ethanol in Petrol". Published in 2002".  available from the web address of http://www.environment.gov.au/atmosphere/fuelquality/publications/ethanol-limit/index.html to read about the possible impacts of ethanol in petrol.
